Unit 6 - Recording Learning Aim A & B

Learning A Aim:
Plan a recording session
Use recording equipment safely to produce a multi-track recording

What is multi tracking?
Multi means many. Multi tracking is a method of sound recording that allows for the separate recording of multiple sound sources to create a cohesive whole.

What are the benefits of multi tracking?
One musician can play or sing may different parts in the same piece of Music.

The levels of each of the track volumes can be balanced at the end and panned to give
the perfect mix.

Each instrument/voice can be recorded separately allowing changes to be made on
balance and tone as you go along.

If one track is unsatisfactory, it can be deleted and re-recorded.

Through a range of recording sessions, I am going to practice and learn how to organise and plan recording studio sessions. My Learning Aim A is demonstrated by my planning of each practice recording session, demonstration of use of equipment, and describing the organisation of each recording session.

Health and Safety when recording

Week starting Monday 4th May 2015...
On Friday, we were given a studio check list, for this we had to go round the studio and find all the parts and take pictures of them, these were the parts of the studio that I discovered...

Week staring Monday 11th May 2015...
On Tuesday in my singing lesson I went through a song from Pitch Perfect called 'flashlight', from this Mr Gower told me to practise some singing warm-ups over the week which were to improve my high voice. On Friday a group of us tried to set up the equipment and link it to Cubase.

Week starting Monday 18th May 2015...
On Friday we tried setting up a microphone , at first I had to get a dynamic microphone and find the XLR to XLR lead, afterwards I plugged that into the end of the microphone and the other end into the snake on the wall into the Channel 1 and connect that channel to Cubase. I needed to set up a stand to put the microphone in and make sure it is an appropriate height. I needed to also put a pop shield on to it so I don't get all the spittle from or onto it. Once it is connected to Cubase i connected the headphone and checked the SPL turning the volume up and down so it was too loud or too quiet. After that we packed all the equipment away.

Week starting Monday 1st June 2015...
On Friday in the practical lesson we recorded Christine playing the violins, we recorded three tracks of Pachelbel's Canon so we were able to multi mix them.

Week starting Monday 8th June 2015...
On Friday we recorded the drums, first we built the drum kit and set up two microphones, one above the kick drum and near the snare. Once they were set up we plugged the microphones into the interface and that was plugged into the laptop.

On Friday we recorded Sophie singing, Ki beat boxing and playing the guitar. To do this
we had to set up the stands for each instrument at the right height. Afterwards we had record the song which was by Lorde.
Week starting Monday 22nd June 2015...
On Friday i used Cubase to edit my violin recordings, I had to play around with the mixer and apply EQ to it and other things.

Today I was using Reason to mix my vocal recording that I chose last week. Firstly I silenced out all the unneeded sounds, where there was breathing, coughing etc.  Then I used EQ to boost desired frequencies and cut the ones that I don't need. This picture is showing the EQ levels and my audios  on Reason. Here you can see that using the EQ, I boost the mid to treble. And then I cut the low base and the high treble, doing this gave me strength in my voice and also cut more unwanted noise.
